why groupon is still one of my fav startups

groupon

ever since i interviewed founder and ceo andrew mason and cto ken pelletier from groupon last year, I knew that there was something special about that little startup. it wasn’t that they were based in chicago or they were so down to earth. it was that they knew exactly what they wanted to create and kept creating it.

well groupon has grown up over the year since i talked to them. they were recently valuated at $1.35 billion and is rapidly out growing their space in the river north area of chicago. and if you are dying to join one of the coolest startups in town, they are also looking for talented engineers.

here is some video from social devcamp chicago during an interview with mason by john r. dallas of hillview partners (captions below videos):

andrew mason of groupon explains why groupon is so sucessfull and all the other copy cats are in it for the money

andrew reminds his teams not to celebrate “before the job is over”. “there is still a lot more to do before we feel like we’ve achieved our vision.”

andrew talks about hiring the best and brightest no matter where they are located. he talks about building out the team working on personalization in the valley.

andrew talks about cleaning out the frig. “i’ve worked at companies before where the refrigerator is full of shit and nobody can use the refrigerator and i just don’t want be that kind of company.”

  1. Great coverage. Thank you. It was a privilege to work with Andrew to deliver a balanced and interesting story. Feedback about his commentary has been very strong. Over the years I’ve interviewed numerous CEOs with less interest in keeping it open and real. Andrew seemed very comfortable being true to his authentic self. Later in the day we heard from his Groupon colleagues how the company is based on authenticity with a twist — great humor! I look forward to charting his meteoric personal and business success. Thanks again.
